WESTPORT, Conn., Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Newman's Own Foundation today announced that it is providing more than $1.5 million in grants to support initiatives that increase access to fresh food and nutrition education in underserved communities. The grants will be awarded to 37 nonprofit organizations around the country that provide programs and services with a focus on nutrition.
"We made these grants based on two central values of Newman's Own Foundation – providing access to healthier foods for children and families, and respect for the nonprofit sector. The people who work for healthier communities are committed and hardworking, and they know better than us how to address these issues," said Bob Forrester, President and CEO, Newman's Own Foundation. "The recipients of these grants exemplify these values, and we look forward to seeing them make innovative and substantive impact through their work."
The nonprofits receiving grants provide a broad range of services – from helping urban bodega owners sell healthier foods to building community gardens in Native American communities; from providing nutrition education at Hispanic healthy lifestyle events to engaging children at school in the process of growing, preparing, and eating their own food.
Newman's Own Foundation has been supporting food and nutrition programs for more than 30 years and has a long-standing commitment to help improve the well-being of children and families. Since 2014, the Foundation has given more than $11.5 million to nutrition-focused organizations.
